Custom Mouthguards & Retainers in Mount Lawley

Precision-fitted protection for sport, and custom retainers that hold your smile exactly where your orthodontic treatment left it.

Two small appliances that save a great deal of trouble

A custom mouthguard and a well-made retainer do very different jobs, but they share the same logic: a small, comfortable device made to fit your mouth precisely prevents damage that would otherwise be expensive, painful and slow to fix. A knocked-out front tooth can mean a lifetime of replacements. Teeth that drift after braces can undo two years of orthodontic work in a matter of months.

At Dental On Railway we make both to a digital scan of your own teeth. There's no tray of impression putty and no gagging — we simply glide a small camera around your arches, and the 3D model goes straight to the laboratory. The result fits closely, sits comfortably, and — crucially for sport and for teenagers — is something you'll actually wear.

Dr Simon Frame looks after families from Mount Lawley, Inglewood, Maylands and across Perth, from junior footballers needing their first guard to adults protecting years of orthodontic investment. Fittings are quick, there's free parking directly across Railway Parade, and because you see the same dentist each time we can keep an eye on growth, fit and wear over the years.

What We Offer

Treatments & what to expect

Click any treatment to see the step-by-step process we'll take you through.

Custom Sports Mouthguards

Laminated, custom-fitted guards made to a digital scan of your teeth. They absorb and spread impact far more effectively than off-the-shelf options, stay put without being clenched in place, and let you breathe and speak on the field.

Junior & Growing Mouth Guards

Children and teenagers need their guards remade more often as adult teeth erupt and jaws grow. We assess fit at every check-up and let families know when it's time for a replacement rather than waiting for a problem.

Mouthguards Over Braces

Playing sport with fixed braces carries real risk of soft-tissue injury. We make guards designed to sit over orthodontic brackets, protecting lips and cheeks while allowing for tooth movement during treatment.

Orthodontic Retainers

Teeth have a lifelong tendency to drift back toward their original position. A custom retainer worn as directed is what turns the end of orthodontic treatment into a permanently straight result.

Clear Removable Retainers

Thin, transparent and almost invisible when worn, clear retainers are comfortable for night-time use and easy to travel with. They're the most common choice after clear aligner treatment.

Bonded (Fixed) Retainers

A fine wire bonded discreetly behind the front teeth holds them in place without you needing to remember anything. We check the bond at every visit and coach you on flossing around it.

Night Guards & Occlusal Splints

If you grind or clench, a hard acrylic splint is a different appliance to a sports guard and does a different job. We'll advise which you need — and some patients genuinely benefit from both.

Repairs, Replacements & Spares

Retainers get sat on, guards get left in hot cars, and both eventually wear out. We can rescan and replace quickly, and many patients keep a spare retainer so a lost one never costs them their result.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Considerably. Boil-and-bite guards are moulded roughly at home, tend to be bulky and loose, and often have uneven thickness exactly where protection matters most. Many wearers end up clenching to keep them in place, which makes breathing and talking harder. A custom guard is made to a digital scan of your own teeth, laminated to the correct thickness for your sport, and fits closely without being held. It protects better and, just as importantly, it gets worn.

The fee depends on the thickness and number of laminated layers, whether it's for a child or an adult, and whether it needs to accommodate braces. Custom sports mouthguards are typically in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars in Australia, and many health funds provide a rebate under general dental — some sporting clubs also contribute. We'll confirm the exact fee at your appointment before we scan, and you're welcome to call our team on (08) 6255 9005 to discuss it beforehand.

Any sport with a risk of contact or a flying ball, stick or elbow. In Perth that most commonly means AFL, rugby, hockey, basketball, netball, boxing, martial arts, skateboarding and cricket for wicketkeepers and batters. Dental injuries in sport are common, expensive and often permanent — a guard is one of the cheapest insurance policies in dentistry.

Usually every twelve to eighteen months during growth spurts, and sooner if adult teeth have erupted or the guard has become loose. We check fit at every routine visit and will tell you when it's due rather than leaving you to guess. A guard that no longer fits properly offers far less protection than it should.

Realistically, indefinitely — though the commitment reduces over time. Most patients wear their retainer full time for a short initial period, then move to nights only, and eventually a few nights a week for life. Teeth continue to shift subtly throughout adulthood regardless of orthodontic history, so night-time retention is what keeps the result stable long term.

Contact us as soon as possible. Teeth can begin moving within days, and the longer you wait the more likely it is that a replacement won't fit. We can usually rescan quickly at our Railway Parade practice and get a new retainer made. If your old one still fits at all, keep wearing it until the replacement arrives.

Rinse it in cool water after every use and brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and a little mild soap — not toothpaste, which is abrasive, and never hot water, which distorts the plastic. Store it dry in its ventilated case, away from car dashboards and sunny windowsills. Bring it along to your check-ups and we'll inspect it for you.
