Scale & Clean in Mount Lawley — Professional Dental Cleaning

A thorough, gentle scale and clean at our Railway Parade practice — removing the build-up that brushing can't, and keeping your gums healthy for life.

Why a professional clean does what brushing can't

Even the most diligent brushing and flossing routine leaves something behind. Within hours of a clean, a soft film of plaque begins forming on your teeth, and within days the minerals in your saliva harden it into calculus (tartar) — a rough, porous deposit that grips the tooth surface and simply cannot be removed with a toothbrush. A professional scale and clean at Dental On Railway removes that build-up from above and below the gum line, resetting your mouth to a genuinely clean starting point.

This matters far beyond fresh breath. Tartar sitting against the gum line harbours bacteria that trigger inflammation — first gingivitis (red, puffy, bleeding gums), and if left unchecked, periodontitis, where the bone supporting your teeth is gradually lost. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in Australian adults, and because it's usually painless in the early stages, most people don't realise it's happening. Regular cleans, paired with a proper examination, are the single most effective way to stop that process before it starts.

At our Mount Lawley practice you'll see Dr Simon Frame himself, not a rotating roster of clinicians. That continuity means small changes in your gum health, bite or enamel are noticed early and tracked over time. Appointments are unhurried, the treatment rooms are calm, and there's free parking directly across Railway Parade plus ACROD accessible parking right at our front door.

What We Offer

Treatments & what to expect

Check-Up & Clean

Our core preventive appointment — a full examination of your teeth, gums and bite followed by a professional scale, polish and personalised home-care plan.

Gum Disease Assessment

Detailed periodontal charting to detect gingivitis and periodontitis early. We record pocket depths, bleeding points and recession so changes can be tracked and treated before bone is lost.

Deep Cleaning (Root Planing)

For patients with established gum disease, we clean the root surfaces beneath the gum line under local anaesthetic — usually across two longer visits, quadrant by quadrant, for full comfort.

Stain Removal & Polishing

Targeted removal of extrinsic staining from coffee, tea, red wine, curry and tobacco. Many patients are surprised how much brighter their teeth look after a clean alone, before any whitening is considered.

Air Polishing for Stubborn Staining

A fine jet of air, water and powder that lifts tenacious stain from grooves, pits and around orthodontic brackets where conventional polishing struggles to reach.

Fluoride Treatment

A concentrated professional fluoride varnish applied after your clean to remineralise early white-spot lesions, reduce sensitivity and add extra protection against decay.

Fissure Sealants

A protective resin flowed into the deep grooves of back teeth — particularly valuable for children and teenagers, where the majority of decay begins.

Preventive Maintenance Programs

For patients with a history of gum disease, dry mouth, high decay risk or complex dental work, we build a customised recall interval — often three or four monthly — to keep everything stable.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

New patients at Dental On Railway can take up our $295 new patient offer, which includes a comprehensive examination, a scale and clean, OPG and bitewing X-rays, and a personalised treatment plan — everything you need for a complete picture of your oral health in one visit. For existing patients, the cost of a clean depends on how much build-up is present, whether X-rays are due and whether any gum treatment is required. Fees for check-ups and cleans typically fall within a modest range in Australia, and most health funds with extras cover preventive dentistry generously — often with no gap or a small one. We can process your health fund on the spot and will always give you a clear quote before we begin.

Every six months suits most people, which is also how most health fund extras policies are structured. If you have a history of gum disease, smoke, have diabetes, wear braces or build up tartar quickly, Dr Frame may recommend a three or four monthly interval. Patients with very stable gums and low decay risk may be comfortable stretching to annual visits. It's a clinical decision we make together, based on what your mouth is actually doing rather than a fixed rule.

For most patients it's completely comfortable — a sensation of vibration, water and pressure rather than pain. If your gums are inflamed or you have exposed root surfaces it can be more sensitive, and there are plenty of ways we manage that: topical numbing gel, desensitising paste, working in shorter sections, or local anaesthetic if you'd prefer. For patients who find dental visits genuinely difficult, we also offer Penthrox inhaled sedation. Please tell us if you're anxious or sensitive — we'll adjust our approach rather than push through.

A clean removes extrinsic staining — the surface discolouration built up from coffee, tea, red wine, curry and smoking — so teeth often look noticeably brighter and feel much smoother afterwards. What it can't change is the intrinsic colour of the tooth itself, which is determined by your dentine. If you'd like to go lighter than your natural shade, professional whitening is the next step, and we offer in-chair whitening at $350 and take-home kits at $150. We always clean first, because whitening works far more evenly on a plaque-free surface.

No, and this is one of the most common misconceptions we hear. Bleeding gums are a sign of inflammation caused by plaque sitting along the gum line, not a sign of damage from brushing. Avoiding the area allows more plaque to accumulate and makes the inflammation worse. Brush gently but thoroughly with a soft brush, clean between the teeth daily, and book an appointment — in most cases bleeding settles within a week or two of a professional clean and improved home care. Persistent bleeding needs assessment, as it can indicate more advanced gum disease.

Most people walk out feeling fresh and go straight back to their day. If there was significant build-up, your gums may feel slightly tender for a day or two and your teeth may be briefly sensitive to cold — warm salty water rinses and a sensitive toothpaste help. Occasionally teeth feel a little more spaced afterwards, simply because the tartar that was wedged between them has gone. If you've had a fluoride varnish we'll ask you to avoid hard or hot foods for a few hours.

Yes, if you hold extras cover that includes general dental. Preventive items such as examinations, cleans, fluoride and X-rays are usually the best-covered part of any policy, and many funds provide one or two cleans per calendar year with little or no out-of-pocket cost. We have HICAPS on site so you can claim instantly and only pay any gap. If you're unsure what you're covered for, bring your card along and we'll help you check.
