Sedation Dentistry Perth — Comfortable Care for Anxious Patients
Twilight IV sedation with a visiting anaesthetist, plus Penthrox and oral options — genuinely comfortable dental care for even the most anxious patients.
You deserve to feel calm at the dentist
Dental anxiety is far more common than you might think, and it's nothing to be embarrassed about. For patients who need the deepest level of comfort, Dental On Railway offers twilight (IV) sedation delivered by a visiting specialist anaesthetist right here at our Mount Lawley practice — an option very few dental practices in the local area are able to provide. You drift into a deeply relaxed, dream-like state, breathe on your own throughout, and most patients remember very little of the appointment afterwards.
Alongside twilight sedation we also offer Penthrox inhaled sedation for fast, patient-controlled relief on the day, and prescribed oral sedation for a deeper level of relaxation without an IV. Whether you've avoided the dentist for years, have a strong gag reflex, or simply want a long appointment to pass in what feels like minutes, there is an option that will suit you.
Sedation is also a practical solution for lengthy or complex treatment — implants, multiple extractions or a full restorative plan can often be completed in a single sitting while you stay relaxed and comfortable. We take time to understand your level of anxiety and your medical history before recommending the most appropriate approach, and for twilight sedation the anaesthetist reviews your health independently as well. Your safety and wellbeing are always our first priority.

Twilight Sedation (IV) — Our Deepest Level of Comfort
Our flagship option for highly anxious patients and longer treatment plans, and something very few practices near Mount Lawley can offer. A visiting specialist anaesthetist attends our Railway Parade practice and administers sedation through a small IV line, so you remain only lightly aware of your appointment and typically remember very little afterwards — while breathing on your own the whole time. It allows complex treatment such as implants, multiple extractions or a full restorative plan to be completed comfortably in a single sitting.
Penthrox (Inhaled Sedation)
A small handheld inhaler delivers Penthrox — a fast-acting medication you breathe in yourself to ease anxiety and discomfort during treatment. You stay awake and in control, and the effects wear off quickly once you stop inhaling.
Oral Sedation
A prescribed sedative tablet taken before your appointment produces a deeper level of relaxation. You'll be drowsy but awake and responsive. Because the effects last longer, you'll need someone to drive you home.
Sedation Consultations
A dedicated appointment to discuss your anxiety in detail, review your medical history, and determine which sedation method is safest and most appropriate for your situation and planned treatment.
Anxiety Management
Beyond sedation, we offer a range of practical techniques to help manage dental anxiety — including detailed explanations before treatment, agreed stop signals, and a relaxed, unhurried approach throughout every visit.
Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Twilight sedation is a form of conscious sedation given through a small intravenous line by a qualified anaesthetist. You're not under general anaesthetic — you breathe on your own and can respond if spoken to — but you're so deeply relaxed that the appointment passes in what feels like moments, and most patients remember very little of it. It requires a visiting anaesthetist, dedicated monitoring equipment and a recovery protocol, which is why relatively few dental practices near Mount Lawley offer it. At Dental On Railway we arrange for a visiting anaesthetist to attend our Railway Parade practice so our most anxious patients can have their treatment completed comfortably, in familiar surroundings, without a hospital admission.
It depends on your level of anxiety, your medical history and the treatment planned. Penthrox is ideal for mild to moderate nerves and shorter appointments — it works within minutes, you control the inhaler yourself, and it wears off quickly. Oral sedation suits patients who want a deeper level of relaxation without an IV, though the effects last longer and you'll need a lift home. Twilight IV sedation is the deepest option and is best for severe dental phobia, a strong gag reflex, or long and complex treatment plans. Dr Frame will talk you through all three at a sedation consultation and recommend the safest, most appropriate choice for you.
Yes, when administered by a trained clinician following a thorough medical review, sedation dentistry is very safe. Dr Frame will review your medical history, medications, and overall health before recommending any sedation. We monitor you throughout the entire procedure.
With Penthrox and oral sedation, you remain conscious throughout — just calm and relaxed and less aware of what's happening around you. With twilight (IV) sedation administered by our visiting anaesthetist, you'll be deeply relaxed and only lightly aware, often remembering very little afterwards — but you continue to breathe on your own.
After a small dose of Penthrox you may be cleared to drive yourself home, but depending on the dose used you may need someone to drive you. After oral or twilight sedation, you must not drive for the rest of the day — please arrange a responsible adult to drive you home and ideally stay with you afterwards.
Sedation is an additional cost on top of your treatment fee. Penthrox is the most affordable option, oral sedation involves a prescription and consultation fee, and twilight (IV) sedation also includes the visiting anaesthetist's fee. We'll provide a clear cost breakdown during your sedation consultation so you can plan accordingly.
